Developing a Playing Philosophy
Excerpt from "Coaching Volleyball Successfully" by Sally Kus

The first day of practice, I tell my players they must walk through the gym doors self-motivated, aggressive, and with a positive attitude. When this actually happens, coaching is a breeze. The players take responsibility for making this part of the philosophy work, and I can focus on my coaching philosophy!

Aggressiveness
"Test your limitations" is a motto of mine. Players will take risks and be aggressive if the coach has developed a safe, comfortable environment. My players are accountable for being in the correct posture and position on the court. Then they can be as aggressive as they are able. If we are going to lose a match, I prefer that our hitters go down swinging.

Self-Motivation
Poor motivation and burnout are due to boredom, poor skills, absence of fun, and losing. Self-motivation is a powerful tool if your players possess it. Coaches can help their players achieve this intrinsic feeling by keeping the sport fun, providing different experiences off the court, varying practices, establishing reasonable goals, being sensitive to the players' needs, and providing for success.

Attitude
How many teams have you been on or coached that didn't have at least one attitude problem? Unfortunately, most people will say very few. Poor attitudes stem from the inability to accept playing mistakes, jealousies, attention seeking, playing time issues, and social problems. One negative person possesses enough power to devastate a team.
