Honor the Past ------------------------- VB ADDICTION! 12/2005
|
Volleyball programs have been well behind the times as far as generating and maintaining a sense of tradition for their programs in comparison to their football and basketball program counterparts. Just recently many small and large programs alike are investing time and resources into creating a sense of tradition and reaping the benefits. With a strong sense of tradition and community coaches are finding that they can offer potential recruits and current players more than just wins and losses.
Individuals excel in all aspects of life if they feel as though they are being intertwined and representing something larger than just themselves and volleyball players are no exception. In fact, coaches are finding it easier to motivate and dedicate players when those players accept that they are responsible for upholding, maintaining and continuing traditions.
So how do you create tradition? The most effective way is to involve past teams and players into the current atmosphere. Many institutions are planning ceremonies at current matches where past teams are honored for their achievements. In conjunction, they host events where current and past players can interact such as banquets and golf tournaments. A vital ingredient into tradition building is having willing alumnae who are actively involved and accessible. A few methods to keep alumnae connected are newsletters, e-mails, holding alumnae matches and inviting them to become guest speakers before or after matches. An additional bonus of having a strong alumnae base is that it will help with raising funds for your program.
The bottom line is that if you can successfully re-involve your alumnae, your program will benefit through recruiting, player motivation, team accomplishment and fund raising.
