History of Beach Volleyball
|
1920 First volleyball courts on the beach in Santa Monica, CA
1927 Volleyball played at a French nudist camp in Franconville
1930 First two-person game played in Santa Monica, CA
1947 First official doubles tournament held at State Beach in California. Won by Saenez-Harris
1950 Open tournaments held at Santa Barbara, State Beach, Corona Del Mar, Laguna and San Diego.
1950 First beach tournament in Brazil.
1960 First Manhattan Beach Open. Open Tournaments held at eight beaches.
1965 CBVA California Beach Volleyball Association formed.
1974 First sponsored tournament held in San Diego. $1500 prize monies.
1976 Olympia Championship of Beach Volleyball with $5000 first place money and 30,000 spectators. Won by Menges and Lee.
1978 Jose Cuervo Tequila becomes first major sponsor.
1979 $11,000 purse offered at Manhattan Beach Open.
1980 Seven tournaments with $52,000 total prize monies.
1982 Tour includes a stop outside of California as it goes to Clearwater, FL.
1983 Twelve tournaments with tour stops in CA, FL, NY and CO. $137,000 in prize money.
1984 Twenty-five events in seven states. Players go on strike at the World Championships at Redondo Beach.
1985 Tour money reaches $275,000
1986 Pro Beach Volleyball makes its network debut on ABC.
1986 Women’s Professional Volleyball Association formed.
1987 FIVB’s first Men’s Beach Volleyball Championship held.
1988 Twenty-eight AVP tournaments.
1991 King of the Beach tournament added to AVP format.
1992 FIVB holds their first women’s event.
1993 NBC televises 10 AVP events, $3,700,000 prize money and 600,000 spectators. Olympic committee grants beach volleyball medal status.
1994 AVP holds 27 events with over $4,000,000 in prize money.
1995 AVP holds 29 events.
1996 First ever Olympic Beach Volleyball events held in Atlanta.
